FAT, ON THE ROCKS

Wow.  The NYC Health Department ain't foolin' around with these PSAs.

Cup o' fat, anyone?

Take a closer look at these. Ick-factor achieved.  I dig it.

Now, I am a firm believer that life is too short not to have yourself a cookie or two.  But wow.  Americans consume a lot of sugar.  A lot.  And the numbers get larger every year.  Don't believe me?  Take a gander at the bewildering stats here.

You've gotta be pretty shocking if you want to catch a New Yorker's attention.  I hope that these ads will at least earn a few double-takes from the public, and maybe even spur them to take some sort of action.  If a cup of bloody, yellow fat doesn't get you thinking, I'm really not sure what will.

Slurp, slurp.

  1. i totally saw these on the subway yesterday, and i got scared. i dont drink soda really at all, but now i'm scared to try anything that's the least bit sugary. i dont know what to do because I like Juice and Gatorade and drinking water all the time is a little too bland for me. i had some juice this morning, but i diluted it with some water. one other thing though, i really dont get one is coming out of these cups/glasses, it's like this nasty goo that looks like fat flesh. it's really disgusting. any thoughts/advice?

thanks for sharing your thoughts, i was wondering if i was alone in noticing these PSAs.

  2. I know, I was really taken aback the first time I glimpsed one of the posters! The goo definitely looks like body fat that's been sucked out after plastic surgery. Yikes. No beating around the bush there! I applaud the Health Dept though...weight is a super sensitive issue in the US so it took some serious cojones to present their point in such a dramatic way.

  4. They sound scary posters but true that looking at the stats it's high time to grab attention.

  5. I love these. I saw one on the subway and I took a photo to send to my friends who don't live here.

  6. I feel like these are pretty groundbreaking in terms of laying responsibility on the individual, too...reminding folks that we are indeed the chaperones of our own appetites. Companies can sell all the high-calorie crap they want, but in the end it's the individual who decides whether or not to consume it.
